Taupo is world-famous for it's lake, and for the fishing there, in nearby rivers and other lakes.. south of Taupo 3 mountains define the Tongariro National Park.

Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage Site. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro and Mt Pihanga guard this sanctuary, and provide endless fun for winter skiers. White water rafting is also an adventure throughout the region. As we reach New Plymouth in Taranaki, another mountain stands above the landscape -- Mt Egmont, also known as Taranaki, the lost sister of the 3 northern mountains. Two small volcanoes are neabry, Kaitake and Pouaki. Further south, Wanganui, the River City, is renowned for it's excellent Museum with wonderful Maori and Pacific Island displays, and it's Art Gallery.
